Cozumel Mexico sits on Mexico’s famous Yukatan Peninsula. A truly unique destination that offers everything you’d want from the rich history and culture from Mexico, along with the tropical twist you can only get from being a true Caribbean Island. While in port in Mexico, there are so many different options in terms of what type of port day you’d really like to have. You can chose to stay on the Island and enjoy some of the best cuisine, shopping, bars and beaches, or you can choose to take a ferry and open up a world of culture that will create memories for a lifetime. The ferry ride across to mainland Playa del Carmen is just over an hour. With its seas rich with reefs and aquatic wildlife, the port of Cozumel has also earned a reputation as one of the most popular places to snorkel or scuba dive.
Things to do when visiting the port of Cozumel
- A resort for a day
- Bar crawl at places like Senior Frogs or Carlos and Charlies
- Self-guided moped tours
- Snorkeling or scuba diving
- Ferry to Playa del Carmen
- Any of the various Mayan ruins
- See the wonders and take a dip into a Cenote
- Waterpark
- Shopping in the port of Cozumel
- Kayaking through caves
There are three major sets of ruins that most people chose from when visiting Cozumel. Each having its own unique attributes as to why you would select that particular attractions.
Chichenizta- For those who don’t mind a heavy travel day in order to see one of the greatest wonders of the history of our world. These ruins have preserved and revitalized to strike awe in even the most seasoned of tourists. The guides are incredible and you will leave Chichenitza feeling like you got a true sense of history
Tulum- Those wanting to travel to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world will enjoy Tulum. Just over an hour from Playa del Carmen, the ruins at Tulum are a great way to get a look at some very impressive and historic structures while still being able to relax on the beach that is just steps away. You aren’t traveling that far and you are getting the best of both worlds.
Coba- This option is for the thrill seekers. While the grounds may not be quite as well maintained as they are at Chichenitza, they do allow you to physically climb to the top of the pyramid. I was able to do this and while it was physically strenuous, the reward you got at the top was well worth it. The view was majestic and it was absolutely amazing.
